Stone Lithography is a medium of printing on a certain type of limestone based on the antipathy of grease and water. The dense structure of the stone absorbs both reservoirs of grease and water, so when ink is deposited by a roller on the surface of the damp stone, only the drawn areas recieve it. Paper is placed on the inked stone and the pressure of the press transfers it onto the paper. In this way, various colours can be printed. Every time the image is changed, ie for a colour separation, the surface of the stone is ground away using carborundum with another stone on top. Thus the process requires considerable physical effort. The advantages of this slow painstaking medium is the huge range of marks available to the artist. From transfered computer generated images to the imprint of an actual object, from the immediate crayon drawing to delicate washes, the stone will give it's own rendition.
The edition is printed by the artist herself and each print varies. The edition is rarely over 10 and the work is printed on rag paper.
